Our clients at Mount Martha approached us with the goal of renovating their garden and turning a previously unusable and overgrown space into a beautiful, functional landscape that the whole family could enjoy. Key components of their brief included: creating more space around their existing 1970s concrete pool by adding seating and an area for lounging, retaining the expansive views of the bay but at the same time creating privacy to shield the pool area from the adjacent houses and street, and creating a play zone for the kids on the lower lawn area complete with basketball court.
Each zone of this garden is designed to complement and enhance the rest of the landscape and the coastal views beyond whilst also looking great as standalone features. Our favourite aspects of this garden are the fire pit area with custom timber bench seat, the crazy paving and organic steppers around the pool, and the floating hardwood steps that lead you down the garden bed slope to the lower level.
Existing trees on the property were thoughtfully incorporated into the design, including a mature palm tree and two weeping cherry trees. Managing the sloping garden bed between the lower lawn area and upper pool area was a challenge that was resolved through the use of rock retaining and indigenous plants that will help prevent soil erosion.
The pool and garden are kept in top condition by our maintenance team, who visit periodically to shape and prune the shrubs and trees, keep on top of the lawn care and leaf litter, and mulch and fertilise as required.
