Director
Craig was born in country Victoria and grew up on a family farm. He worked in golf course construction and maintenance for over a decade before being offered a role working for a local landscaper. Craig liked the industry and could see the demand for landscaping work on the Peninsula, so about 6 months later he started his own business, originally called Smart Turf & Irrigation.
More than 15 years later, Smart Landscapes is now an established and well-respected full-service landscaping company offering landscape design, landscape construction and garden maintenance services to clients on the Mornington Peninsula. Craig is known for his professionalism, his dedication to delivering the best possible outcomes for his clients, and his genuine love for landscaping and horticulture.
Outside of work, water skiing, golf, mountain biking and kite surfing are Craig’s recreational pastimes of choice, as well as spending time with his family. In his twenties and thirties, Craig competed nationally in the slalom discipline, which probably set him up well for the twists and turns of life as a business owner!
Craig leads the three divisions of the Smart Landscapes team with assistance from Justin, Tim, and Nick, who run the design, construction, and maintenance divisions respectively.
Lead Designer
An inherent passion and talent for design saw Justin choose to study a range of design disciplines, from graphic design to furniture design, before his love of the outdoors and using his hands drew him to a career in the landscape industry. In 2006, he started a Landscaping Apprenticeship and studied Certificate III in Horticulture (Landscape). He then found work with one of the state’s top landscape design and construction companies, Ian Barker Gardens, further developing his love for landscaping whilst working on projects throughout the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
In 2015, he made the move to the Mornington Peninsula and joined the Smart Landscapes team. Here, he began to combine his passion for design with his love of landscaping, transitioning from working on site to the office and becoming the company’s in-house Landscape Designer.
Justin’s affinity for plants and horticulture is seen through his refined and considered approach to planting design. Justin’s many hobbies and interests outside of work include music, art and visiting galleries, and exploring national parks and beaches along Victoria’s coastline.
Landscape Project Manager
Tim’s passion for building spaces drew him into a career in landscaping, where he has thrived helping create outdoor living spaces for Smart Landscapes’ clients. Tim brings to the team a long history of designing, planning, and building spaces for people to enjoy.
Tim’s skills as a Project Manager were honed after many years working in the events industry where he was responsible for creating and managing events of all shapes and sizes. He pairs those skills with a passion for outdoor spaces and revels in the process of bringing a landscape design to life. Tim is a natural problem solver with a very strong work ethic and a high level of attention to detail, attributes which serve him well in his role as the key point of contact for Smart Landscapes clients during the construction phase of their landscaping project.
Tim loves the combination of the hardscape aspects of his job such as decking, paving, and architectural concreting, with the subtlety and softness of native coastal planting designs. Outside of work, you’ll most likely find Tim surfing or pottering around at home in the garden or workshop.
Lead Gardener
Nick’s love of working outdoors naturally led him to begin his career as an Apprentice Gardener after leaving school. Nick is now a Qualified Horticulturist with a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens and over a decade of experience working in residential gardens.
Nick is a people person to his core. He loves working in a team environment and building relationships with clients. Nick prides himself on being a trusted and reliable contact for clients who can confidently leave the care of their gardens and lawns in his capable hands. He also enjoys watching the junior members of his team learn and develop their skills in horticulture and become more confident at garden management under his supervision.
The satisfaction of a job well done and the reward of watching a client’s garden thrive and establish properly after consecutive visits from the Smart Landscapes team mean a lot to Nick. His favourite plant species are Hydrangeas and the Acer ‘Senkaki’ Japanese Maple. Outside of work, Nick loves to play golf and spend time with friends.
